Project Overview

Stoney Studio were approached to design a top-to-bottom renovation of a Victorian townhouse; turning it from a 3 to 4 bedroom home. This involved significant layout changes that included extending the kitchen on the ground floor, as well as an attic conversion and rear roof extension for a new bedroom and bathroom. The project also included a set of bespoke joinery items that enabled our clients to make efficient use of every available space throughout the house.

The scheme was designed to fall within permitted development rights which contributed to the relatively fast programme. From the first meeting, the project was completed within 10 months.

It was important that the renovation didn't modernise the character of the house too much, so every effort was made to sympathetically pair the new details with the old. New cornicing and ceiling roses were added in combination with those that were original. Where left exposed, original floorboards were sanded back and retreated. The parquet flooring was salvaged from a car boot sale and its use within the project successfully adds a new, yet traditional feature to the history of the house.

Where the design could express a more contemporary character was within the new kitchen, ground floor extension and attic conversion. On the ground floor, this move from the old to the new is highlighted by the deep oak reveals that line the stepped openings between the library and kitchen, as well as between the hall and kitchen.

Elmhurst stands as an example of how a house built over 150 years ago can be thoughtfully modernised to suit the needs of those living there in the present as well as the future.
